Residents urged the commission to temper proposed marina slip rate increases tied to the downtown marina rehabilitation and to provide clearer cost data before implementing large, one-time hikes.
Mark Hanick of 512 Georgetown Place, a 20-year resident and former Safety Harbor Boat Club commodore, said he supported the marina repairs but warned that significant, immediate fee increases would force many slip holders to give up their slips. He asked the commission to consider phased increases after reviewing the cost data that city staff had promised to provide. "From what I'm aware of in terms of cost, I would suggest that we might wanna look at that if you haven't," Hanick said during public comment.
Paul Matthews and other speakers noted that nearby marinas such as St. Petersburg charge higher fees but offer additional amenities; Matthews also said downtown events can periodically limit marina access and asked the city to consider that when setting rates.
Staff response: Commissioners acknowledged the concerns and asked staff to provide the additional cost documentation and to consider phased increases or other options to reduce sudden financial impacts on slip holders.
