Committee previews yearlong climate communications calendar; members ask for KPIs and seasonal timing

Committee staff presented a draft communications strategy and calendar on Nov. 6 that proposes theme‑based outreach tied to the Climate Action Roadmap. The draft assumes a rotating focus across roadmap categories, with one category highlighted approximately every two months and coordinated outreach activities, partner events and informational campaigns.

The memo attached to staff’s proposal lists target audiences and suggested outreach tactics and suggests piloting the calendar for one year before refinements. Staff said the goal is to "enhance climate literacy and inspire leadership among community members for climate action." The proposed schedule would begin in January and run annually.

Committee members suggested more flexibility in timing rather than strict two‑month blocks, to align outreach with seasonal activities and partner calendars. For example, members suggested moving heat‑related outreach earlier in the year, timing tree‑planting communications with April/May events, and placing repair/reuse drives around the December holiday season. Members also recommended developing measurable KPIs—such as EV registrations, signups for energy coaching, swap shop visits or inquiries to GreenNeedham—to gauge impact.

Staff said they will incorporate feedback and pursue KPIs for items where metrics are available and will coordinate partners to avoid calendar conflicts. The committee requested a draft with KPI suggestions before the plan is presented to the Select Board; staff aims to start the program in January if approved.
