The Glynn County Board of Commissioners on Nov. 6 approved a sign-variance request to reduce the billboard setback from residential property lines from 300 feet to 100 feet at 5574 Altamaha Avenue (parcel 03-02142).
Christopher Carey, senior planner, told the board the current requirement is a 300-foot buffer and the applicant is seeking a 100-foot buffer for placement of a billboard. Carey said the affected property across the road is zoned R-12 for school-board use, which created the variance need rather than the presence of a residential subdivision.
Applicant Peyton Carver told the commission the proposed sign "is a static board with light. Just it's not it's not gonna be a full digital board." Carver said the board will be illuminated at night by lights rather than being a digital LED sign. Commissioners asked whether the sign could be converted to digital in the future; the applicant said that possibility exists in general but that he had "no even thoughts of even having digital right there" at this time.
Carey confirmed the proposed structure is approximately 36 to 38 feet tall and described the site layout. Commissioners also noted there is a senior center in the general area; Carey said the school system had been contacted and had no issue with the proposed placement on the school-board parcel.
A district 4 commissioner moved to approve the variance from section 809(d)(1)(i) reducing billboard distance requirements for the parcel; the motion carried after a second. The approval allows the static, illuminated billboard to be placed perpendicular to the road with illumination on both faces, subject to applicable permitting and building-code requirements.
