San Juan County approved advertising a request for proposals and applications for the county's Historic Preservation Grants Program at its Oct. 7 meeting. The amount available from the account balance was reported as $16,007.63.
Clerk Sally (presenter) reviewed previously funded awards and noted that the program historically has been administered with relatively small awards to nonprofits and governmental agencies for preservation projects. Council discussed sequencing with the Lodging Tax Advisory Committee (LTAC) process and asked that the clerk time the advertisement to avoid overlap and to give applicants an orderly path to consider both resources when appropriate.
Council asked that the clerk share a draft advertisement and application form with council members before publication and that the review panel include at least two staff reviewers plus the council chair (or designee) to ensure impartiality. Several council members noted the relatively small pool of funds and suggested that the county consider holding dollars until the following year if it makes sense to accumulate a larger award pool; staff noted that could be an option going forward.
Council approved a motion to advertise the RFP and create an application window; clerk will release details and a web application page and will schedule the review and award timeline.
