Council amends Building Advisory Council membership rules to revive committee

San Juan County Council on Oct. 7 adopted an ordinance modifying the statutes that govern the Building Advisory Council to broaden how members are selected and to improve island representation.
Jessica Hudson of the Department of Community Development presented the third public hearing on the ordinance, explaining the changes focus on membership composition and allow more flexible selections by district and category (for example, a person can qualify under both an island residency and a professional category such as architect). The council heard that the advisory committee had been nonoperational for roughly six years and the change is intended to make it simpler to populate the panel.
Council member Paulson, who led the ordinance effort, said the revision aims to restore a functional advisory body that can support code work and DCD staff as they proceed with future code amendments. Council discussed prior concerns that some advisory bodies had been island‑centric and noted the new composition language aligns membership with voting districts to improve geographic balance.
Council moved and approved the ordinance during the meeting.
