Recreation staff reported three regional TRAPS awards, a higher-than-normal membership revenue year ($210,000 versus a typical $125,000) and a $2,500 sponsorship from Canes of Garland to support two community events.
Albert Montero, recreation director, briefed the board on departmental achievements and revenue trends.
Montero said the department won three awards at the regional TRAPS conference: recreation facility and aquatic center design of excellence, Watson Park park-design excellence and a part-time employee recognition for a volunteer. The department plans to submit additional entries for the state conference in Corpus Christi.
On revenue, Montero said the parks and recreation system typically sells about $125,000 in memberships across city rec centers in a year; this year membership revenue reached about $210,000, driven largely by strong demand at the Hofer Recreation Center. "We are almost outgrown it a little bit. It's very staff intensive," Montero said regarding the Hofer facility.
Montero also announced a $2,500 sponsorship from Canes of Garland (Raising Cane's). The sponsorship will support two upcoming events: the Trunk and Hunt (Easter egg event) and the Sweetheart Dance.
Board members thanked staff for the reports and asked for continued updates on facility usage and award submissions.
