Residents voice traffic, character and communication concerns over proposed Sheetz, mall redevelopment

Several Monroeville residents used the public-comment portion of Monday's meeting to press council on development issues and neighborhood character.
Robert Serafini (4th Ward) raised objections to a proposed Sheetz gas station near an existing GetGo and adjacent to a school. He said presentations by the applicant were "vague" on traffic analysis and called previous council votes to advance the project "very surprising." "I was very surprised and disappointed by every one of your votes," Serafini said, criticizing council action at prior meetings.
Other residents described traffic and safety concerns related to proposed large-format retail redevelopment near the Monroeville Mall and expressed frustration with developer communications. Diana Woodhall, Diane Echagary and Lois Stromhiller all urged the municipality to involve residents earlier in design and planning and to prioritize preservation of neighborhood character, tree cover and sufficient landscaping. "It's becoming more cement and blacktop than it is becoming the Monroeville that I've known," one resident said of recent changes in neighborhood character.
Council members noted conditional-use and public-hearing processes provide formal opportunities for input, and staff confirmed there will be comment periods at the upcoming Nov. 11 meetings, including separate conditional-use hearings where applicable.
