Council highlights food assistance, volunteer needs, safety and local events

Multiple council members and the mayor used their remarks on Nov. 4 to announce community assistance efforts and public-safety concerns.

Council members urged residents to use local resources for food assistance in advance of the Thanksgiving holiday. Councilman Smith and Councilwoman Menacher noted the Manna meal program operates Monday through Friday and is seeking volunteers and donations; the transcript includes a contact number for Manna, (256) 543-5876. Council members also referenced United Way's 211 service as a centralized resource for residents seeking help.

Councilman Avery presented a resolution authorizing discretionary funds to assist the Edgewell County Food Bank in response to WIC and SNAP needs; the resolution was adopted and immediate consideration granted, but the transcript did not state a dollar amount.

Councilman Avery raised a safety concern about a drainage pond adjacent to a park and a housing community in District 3, saying temporary fencing remains in place despite multiple communications and that children have been seen near the water.
