Lucas County proclaims Oct. 9 as Children’s Environmental Health Day; health department offers tips

Lucas County commissioners voted unanimously on Oct. 7 to proclaim Oct. 9 as Children’s Environmental Health Day and accepted informational materials from the Toledo-Lucas County Health Department.
Ben Pushka introduced the proclamation and said the observance is ‘‘a reminder of why sustainability work matters and how it deeply connects to the health of our community.’’ Melissa Lanier, childhood and youth wellness manager for the Toledo-Lucas County Health Department, described why children are more vulnerable to environmental hazards and pointed to resources included with the proclamation packet—guides on toxic-free living, PFAS and microplastics, and lists of safer donation items.
Lanier suggested practical steps families can take to reduce exposures, including reducing pesticide use, rinsing produce, limiting single-use plastics and avoiding microwaving food in plastic containers. She also recommended regular handwashing and vacuuming to reduce harmful substances that collect in carpets and upholstery.
The proclamation packet also lists materials developed by the Getting to 1 coalition’s environmental pollutants committee; county officials asked staff to post the materials online.
