Valor Court presenters and veterans describe program’s role in treating invisible wounds

Representatives from Valor Court presented a short video and several veterans and volunteers described the court’s treatment-focused approach to veterans charged with offenses. The program’s stated mission is to “transform the lives of the veterans that come before us and to enable them to go on to live happy productive lives,” presenters said.

Multiple veterans at the meeting described isolation after service, substance use and encounters with the criminal justice system, and credited Valor Court with providing a path to recovery. One veteran said, “Doing things that I shouldn't have been doing ... the criminal activity that comes along with self medication. I don't think anybody is ever prepared for the consequences that comes with the criminal justice system,” and added that Valor Court “has definitely changed my life.”

Speakers described the court’s emphasis on peer mentorship, weekly case work and graduations that mark participants’ progress. The council was asked to share the program’s video and materials with community partners to increase awareness. Program partners listed during the presentation included the Knights of Columbus, Truth and Honor, IBH, Warrior's Journey Home and Tyler's Redemption Place; presenters said partner organizations expand housing, rehabilitation and wraparound supports available to veterans.

Judge Amy Corwin Jones, identified in the meeting as founding judge of the program, was mentioned as instrumental in starting the volunteer and staff involvement that supports court operations. Council members thanked presenters and encouraged distribution of the video at events and meetings.
