The Hocking County Board of Commissioners on Oct. 30 approved a statement expressing the county s concern over SMEAD manufacturing's decision to close a longtime facility and pledged outreach to affected employees and regional economic-development partners.
"SMEAD has been a cornerstone of our local economy, providing steady employment, supporting countless families," Commissioner 2 read from the prepared statement. The letter described the facility buildings (two buildings of roughly 315,000 and 225,000 square feet) and noted the sites would not be available until May 2027, while framing the property as an opportunity for future investment.
The commissioners said they would coordinate with South Central Job and Family Services, Area 20 Workforce and regional partners. Commissioners announced a noon meeting that day with Matt Abbott, president of Ohio Southeast, and representatives from the Hocking County CIC to discuss redevelopment and workforce support.
The board voted to approve the letter and authorized outreach and a meeting to pursue options for new investment and worker assistance.
Ending: Commissioners said they remain committed to using available county, regional and state resources to support affected workers and to attract new investment to the SMEAD site.
