Souderton students partner with ALMAC and Garden of Health for classroom-to-farm program

The Souderton Area School District on Oct. 23 showcased a spotlight video and presentations about a multiyear classroom-to-farm partnership with ALMAC, the Indian Valley Education Foundation and the Garden of Health.

The video and speakers described fifth-grade students harvesting crops, transplanting lettuce, learning about herbs and bees, and creating scarecrows as part of a curriculum connection to classroom lessons. "Every elementary school will get a raised bed, and they will get a science kit where the kids will learn how to grow their own food and what it's like, to taste food right out of the bed," a Garden of Health representative said during the presentation.

District staff said ALMAC provided materials and a grant to the Indian Valley Education Foundation to support ready-to-grow kits and classroom materials, and the program is intended to link local industry and science career pathways with nutrition education. "Our aim is to really help students understand where their food comes from, how their food is grown, how it affects the health of their bodies and also strengthens their communities," a district presenter said.

Board members and presenters framed the effort as a long-term enrichment program that will be rolled out formally next year; the district credited ALMAC and the foundation as funding sources for the initial stage. The segment concluded with appreciation for the partners and a note that the video highlighted the first phase of the project.

The presentation supplied a program preview rather than a formal action item; no vote or budget appropriation related to the partnership was recorded in the meeting minutes posted on the agenda.
