Unionville Elementary highlights kindergarten literacy and launches student council crayon drive

Unionville Elementary Principal Michelle Lafferty used the Oct. 21 Unionville-Chadds Ford School District board meeting to showcase the school’s kindergarten program and literacy efforts and to introduce a student-led community service initiative.
Lafferty told the board that the school has aligned its work with the superintendent’s district values — educational excellence, superior school experience, people-centered culture and principled stewardship — and described full-day kindergarten as “going absolutely amazingly.” She highlighted classroom activities, summer reading challenges, buddy-class reading and staff read-alouds on the school’s UETV channel. “Books, books, books,” she said, noting events including a PTO Fun Run that featured reading activities and raffles.
Student council members Grace, Sophie, Sam, Poppy and Abby presented the CRAN initiative — a plan to collect used crayons in boxes at the school, send them to Staples for refurbishment, and distribute them to children in hospitals. A student explained the program’s goals: reducing waste, supporting children in hospitals and teaching students they can make a difference. “It grows our community, our school, our hearts, and our lives,” one student said.
Lafferty also described a gratitude theme across the school (a “grateful pumpkin patch” display), staff wellness activities (including a yoga session) and school events such as fall fest and a community fair. Board members thanked the principal and student council and praised the school’s early-education programming.
The board acknowledged Rachel Lomas’s appointment as interim director of pupil services and recognized departing district staff, including Dr. Ryder, who will become assistant superintendent at Coatesville Area School District. Lafferty invited board members and the public to visit the school during the day to see programming in person.
