Board committee recommends ‘no-cut’ philosophy for middle-school athletics; could require modest supplemental funding
Summary
A subcommittee recommended steps to maximize middle-school participation (limit cuts in fall/spring, expand winter basketball rosters, consider practice-coach supplements), highlighted potential additional transportation and official-fee costs and estimated a worst-case supplementary need of roughly $20,000 pending a detailed needs analysis.

District staff and committee members presented recommendations to increase participation in middle-school athletics and to formalize a more inclusive philosophy at the Oct. 13 work session.
Presenters said the goal is to let students “try a new sport” and gain continuity into high school rather than use cuts at the middle level. The proposed measures include avoiding roster limits for fall and spring sports, expanding basketball rosters in winter, experimenting with rotated game schedules so more athletes play, and creating a paid practice-coach supplemental to provide adequate adult supervision and instruction when rosters grow.
Administrators acknowledged potential additional costs—transportation, officials’ fees and practice-coach stipends—and said a financial analysis will return to the board. “It could, in the worst case, be at the $20,000 mark,” a presenter said, but officials said actual costs depend on participation levels and scheduling choices. Board members praised the philosophy for student development and asked staff to finalize resource needs and return with a more detailed cost and implementation plan.
