Board to consider Spanish exchange, lab-based middle-school science and AP English reading list additions

Dr. Jenkins and world-language staff said the Spanish department plans an exchange program modeled on the existing French and German programs, with students traveling to Spain in 2026 and Spanish students hosting Unionville students in 2027. The department hopes for a minimum of about 15 participants to make the exchange viable and said exchange experiences provide cultural immersion that differs from short-term travel.
Middle-school science teachers described the Lab-Aids curriculum and hands-on materials now in use for grades six through eight. Presenter Miss Salisbury showed classroom photos and highlighted the program’s emphasis on phenomenon-based learning and student-led problem solving.
The English department proposed adding 11 novels to the AP English literature curriculum, aligning with College Board recommendations and offering more diverse literary choices for twelfth-grade students. Teachers said the proposed reading list is available for community review and will be presented for board approval in November.
All three items are planned for board action in the coming month; administrators emphasized implementation planning, minimum-participant thresholds for international exchanges and the instructional benefits of the Lab-Aids materials.
