Staff reported a forecast that parks operations will come in more than $1 million under budget this fiscal year and described plans to direct some of those savings to forestry work, including tree and stump removal.
A staff presenter said anticipated savings would allow the department to address backlog work; the presenter cited a predicted reduction in emergency tree work and said the city would use some savings for additional forestry services. The presenter described the estimated budgetary position as enabling reinvestment in operations.
Staff also detailed a planned operational change tied to existing city ordinance: in many cases the adjacent property owner will resume mowing the right-of-way next to their parcel rather than the city—s contractors. Staff said exceptions would remain for locations with environmental or ditch-safety concerns. The presenter estimated the change would realize roughly $225,000 in annual savings and said property owners would receive correspondence ahead of any March implementation.
No ordinance change was voted on at this meeting; staff described the operational rollout and public-notification plan.
