Salina Parks & Recreation reports dog park openings, splash‑pad progress and facility upgrades
Summary
Staff reported completion of the Parker Park dog park and ongoing improvements including Berkeley dugout refurbishments, 9th Street median landscaping, Jerry Ivey splash pad design review, ADA drinking fountain adjustments and vandalism repairs. Staff also provided participation numbers for fall programs and upcoming tournaments.
Parks and Recreation staff reviewed recent completions and ongoing projects, and provided participation counts for fall athletics programs.
Completed and in‑progress projects reported to the advisory board included: the Parker Park dog park opening with installed benches and waste stations; removal of deteriorated concrete benches and tables across Oakdale, Sunset, Kenwood and Thomas parks; completion of landscaping and irrigation repairs on 9th Street medians; removal and replacement of a vandalized toilet in the soccer complex bathroom; lowering and replacement of a drinking fountain at Dean Evans Stadium as part of the department’s ADA transition plan; and refurbishment of dugouts at Berkeley Family Recreational Area fields 1–4.
Staff highlighted cost savings from self‑performed work on dugout refurbishments and described an ongoing ramp program to improve playground accessibility across multiple parks. Project updates included selection of designs and colors for the Jerry Ivey Memorial Park splash pad equipment; manufacturing approvals are underway. Barclay Park dog park installations are in progress with three shade pavilions on order.
Athletics participation: staff reported 27 adult volleyball teams and 20 youth volleyball teams in field‑house programs, 34 youth soccer teams using the Salina Soccer Complex and 31 adult softball teams in fall leagues. Staff noted several USA Softball tournaments drawing about 33 teams on peak days and that some events require overflow to BFRA fields when Bill Burke reaches capacity.
Staff recommended presenting forestry and cemetery statistics in an accumulative monthly format and said they will include more data‑driven tables in future activity reports. No formal actions were taken on project updates during the meeting.
