Salina approves $200,000 contract to paint 465 fire hydrants; city aims for longer-lasting finish

The Salina City Commission voted Oct. 27 to award a contract to Wildcat Painting Incorporated of Wichita for fire-hydrant painting (Project No. 250017), authorizing up to $200,000 to sandblast and repaint 465 hydrants in an initial northwest corridor and selected park locations.
Martha Tasker, director of utilities, said the northwest corridor was selected because it includes older parts of the community and serves as a gateway; park hydrants were included after public requests to “spruce up” park fixtures. She told commissioners the specification calls for high-visibility yellow — the standard used when hydraants are installed — and that the contractor will sandblast the hydrants “down to the metal” so the coating bonds and lasts. Tasker said staff’s goal is a coating that will last about 15 years, similar to products used on the city’s water towers.
During public comment, Ben Winholz asked whether the contract price covers full sandblasting and prep; Tasker confirmed the bid specification requires sandblasting to metal and full prep before painting. Tasker also said the city owns about 2,620 hydrants and the current project covers 465 of them.
A motion to award the contract and authorize the city manager to execute the agreement upon fulfillment of bid prerequisites carried on a 5-0 vote.
