The City of Salina Design Review Board unanimously approved an application to install a non-illuminated projecting sign for McCallson Tax and Accounting at 232 South Santa Fe Avenue.
Staff told the board the application (CC 25-20, filed by Lumineo Signs on behalf of McCallson Tax and Accounting) proposes a circular projecting sign 4 feet 11 inches in diameter (about 19 square feet) to be mounted above the entrance on the east-facing facade. Staff said the sign would be aluminum with a printed vinyl face and blue lettering on a white background, and that it is non-illuminated.
Staff reviewed building context and sign allowances. The building, which is divided into three tenant spaces, has 50 feet of frontage and a 150-square-foot total sign allowance. With the existing Hearing Healthcare Associates projecting sign (24 square feet) and removal of an 8-square-foot face at 230A, staff calculated this proposed sign would use 43 square feet of the 150-square-foot allowance, leaving 107 square feet remaining.
In its analysis staff found the sign would be coordinated with the facade composition, would not cover architectural features, would not be internally illuminated, and would be centered above the entrance. Staff recommended option 2: approval subject to the board’s standard condition that any substantive changes be returned to the board or reviewed by staff as needed.
Megan Schafer of Lumineo Signs described mounting methods (match plates, concrete screws or concrete anchors, silicone sealing and guy wires for extra support) and confirmed the sign would not be illuminated. Board members asked about drive-by readability; a designer advised vertical stacking or slight layout changes could improve legibility but said the change was a recommendation, not a condition.
A motion to approve option 2 with the standard staff condition was moved, seconded and approved by voice vote, recorded as unanimous (5-0).
The board took no additional conditions. The sign may proceed under the standard permitting process; staff will review any changes and return to the board if necessary.
