Vice President Curzio donated a historical book, 'The Sable Arm: Black Troops in the Union Army, 1861–1865,' to the Carmel High School library on Oct. 21. Curzio described the book's local connection and historical significance and read an excerpt from a 1957 Putnam Courier article about the Cornish family—s ties to the district.
The board accepted the donation and the superintendent said the book will be placed in the high-school library. Curzio noted the book is regarded as an early comprehensive study of Black troops in the Civil War and said it is "long overdue" to return to the high-school collection.
