Family and colleagues ask legislature to name Sandwich overpass for Marine Staff Sergeant Raymond G. Torvill

Family members and local officials asked the Joint Committee on Transportation to approve H.4,374 to name the Quaker Meeting House Road overpass in Sandwich for Staff Sergeant Raymond G. Torvill.

"Ray enlisted in the United States Marine Corps during his senior year of high school," said Ray's father (testifying as Raymond W. Torvill), summarizing his son's service deployments and leadership roles. Family speakers described a decade of service that included deployments with infantry units and time as an instructor preparing Marines for deployment.

Representative Steven Exaros opened the family testimony and said naming the bridge would honor a hometown Marine and keep his memory visible to Sandwich residents and visitors. "Naming this overpass would be an honor and a lasting reminder of who he was and what he stood for," Exaros said.

Corey Torvill, the staff sergeant's brother, described his brother's leadership in youth programs and volunteer work with veterans organizations. Corporal George Challis and other community members recounted Ray's long involvement with the Young Marines program and local veterans' ceremonies.

Witnesses also raised the broader issue of veteran mental health. Testimony stated that Staff Sergeant Torvill died by suicide on Sept. 15, 2024, while on active duty at Camp Pendleton, California, and family members said the naming would help raise awareness about invisible struggles service members face after returning home.

The committee heard the family's request and expressed condolences; no formal vote was taken at the hearing.
