The Tulsa City Council heard public comments from veterans and parade organizers about the city’s Veterans Day Parade and a separate special-event application for a John 3:16 Mission turkey distribution, and the council approved a consent package that included the special-event items.
"We're proud to have 1 Oak as our presenting sponsor along with many community partners and supporters," said Nicole Montgomery, a U.S. Army veteran and life member of American Legion Post 1 Tulsa and VFW Post 577, describing the parade and its private funding. "The Tulsa Veterans Day Parade remains privately funded and we are deeply grateful for the city of Tulsa for continuing to support one of the oldest Veterans Day parades in the nation."
Josh Starks, who helps organize the parade, told the council the event begins at 11 a.m. on Nov. 11 downtown and reported registration numbers: "I have 4,033 registered. This is the beginning of the month. I think we're gonna breach 5,000 people marching in the parade this year," he said. Starks also described logistical coordination for a naming ceremony at the new VA hospital and said a planned flyover was uncertain because federal approval could not be obtained amid a government shutdown.
John Huffines spoke in support of a special-event application for the John 3:16 Mission Turkey distribution scheduled for November at 200 North Ute and asked for approval.
Councilor moved and the council approved items 4b through 4m by roll call, with an emergency clause attached to item 4b; that omnibus motion included the special-event items that members of the public had discussed. The approval was recorded by roll call after the motion.
Organizers and volunteers said they expect heavy participation and thanked city staff and sponsors. The council did not change parade scheduling or funding policy in this meeting; the parade remains a privately funded event coordinated with city permitting.
