The organization previously known as the NDSU Research and Technology Park presented a progress report to the Legislative Management Higher Education Committee describing a rebrand and an operational shift toward rapid commercialization of university research in precision agriculture, defense and energy.
Brenda Weiland, chief executive officer of the park entity, said the new brand (reported in testimony as "Endeavor") and a contract with the state that started Oct. 1 have enabled an initial build-out of an electronics lab, collaborative workspaces and a small technical staff. Weiland said the park's mission is to move university-stage innovations at technology-readiness levels 4'7 toward market introduction and to build partnerships with industry and military users.
"We pick up from [university research] and focus initially in levels 4 through 7," Weiland said, describing the park's objective of maturing prototypes into marketable products and, where appropriate, spinning companies out of developed technologies.
Technical capabilities and near-term demonstration Josh Jalinski, Endeavor's chief technology officer, outlined the technology areas the organization is assembling: perception systems that give autonomous equipment "superhuman" sensing, positioning and navigation, embedded systems design, and robotics integration. He described a rapid two-week prototype for a search-and-rescue exercise: the team 3D-scanned a hand-held radio and engineered a sleeve that integrates a tracking device, enabling position tracking tied to existing radio assets.
"We put heads together, brought the team together, and we rapidly understood the problem," Jalinski said. He said the prototype will be field-tested at Camp Grafton alongside the 119th Wing and other partners, and that the work is intended to demonstrate how rapid commercialization can lead to spin-outs or industry adoption.
Funding and timeline Weiland told the committee the park received the first tranche of legislative funding and was asked to raise matching private funds. She summarized a multi-year plan that allocates early funds to team recruitment, facility upgrades and prototyping and said the park is actively soliciting $5 million in private match commitments alongside state support. Weiland said the park hopes its activities will lead to patents, licensed IP and sustained industry partnerships that expand North Dakota's commercialization ecosystem.
Committee questions and partner interest Committee members asked about federal and defense interest. Weiland said defense partners have shown "significant interest" in a rapid, highly technical team that can move quickly to fieldable solutions. She and Jalinski also described aggressive engagement with precision-ag industry suppliers who may use the park to accelerate product iteration.
Why it matters The park's stated goal is to provide the missing step between university research and market-ready hardware, software and systems. If successful, the organization expects to accelerate local product development in agriculture and defense and attract partners seeking rapid prototyping and field validation.
