Residents press commission on appointments and transparency for boards and committees

During public comment on Nov. 10, several residents raised concerns about the process for appointing members to city boards, commissions and advisory committees. Lisa Mazuka told the commission she was appointed as an alternate to the Housing Appeals Board in March 2023, requested promotion to a full member in October 2024 and received no written explanation when another person was appointed to the seat; she asked the commission to resolve the matter in a transparent manner.
Resident Tim Schwander urged broader outreach and argued the city recycles the same volunteers; he said there were 43 applications on file with the commission clerk. Commissioners acknowledged the historical difficulty in finding volunteers for specialized boards and discussed whether the next commission should revisit application and appointment processes. Commissioner Coontz and others said they supported clearer applicant materials and earlier review of qualifications before appointments are made.
Commissioners agreed the issue merits further conversation and that staff historically has participated in recruitment and City engagement events such as a parent summit to connect residents with opportunities to serve.
