Morris Township honors Detective Kevin Yarzab, swears in two patrol officers

The Township Committee recognized Detective Kevin Yarzab as Officer of the Year, honored two patrol officers for DWI enforcement, and formally swore in Ryan Theriault and Corey Russo as new patrol officers for the Morris Township Police Department.
The Morris Township Committee on Sept. 17 presented departmental awards and completed swearing-in ceremonies for two newly hired patrol officers.
Chief Scherer introduced Detective Kevin Yarzab as the township’s Officer of the Year, citing his role training the detective bureau and coordinating complex investigations. "Detective Kevin Yarzab is being recognized for the officer of the year," the chief said, noting Yarzab’s leadership in an investigation that led to the arrest of two suspects and the recovery of a BMW used in the crimes. The chief said detectives returned $11,550 to a fraud victim and credited Yarzab for work on package-theft and other theft investigations.
The chief also recognized Patrolman Macarico and Patrolman Palacio for strong DWI enforcement, saying Macarico logged 20 DWI arrests this past year and Palacio 19. "Those are 39 people that shouldn't have been operating a motor vehicle," the chief said, linking enforcement to community safety.
Mayor Donna Garriglia administered the oath of office to Ryan Theriault (hired Jan. 13; a Morris County Police Academy graduate who grew up in Morris Township) and Corey D. Russo (hired Sept. 8; previously with Irvington Police Department and the New Jersey Department of Corrections). The mayor and committee welcomed the officers and called on them to engage in community policing.
Jeff Frazell, chair of the police oversight committee, and committee members praised the department for professionalism and community engagement. The committee did not take formal action during the awards and swearing-in portion beyond the ceremonial oaths.
The committee recessed briefly after the ceremony and then reconvened to continue other agenda business.
