Council considers ordinance to keep semis off neighborhood streets after Union repaving

City staff presented proposed amendments to municipal code 9-10-4 to prohibit semi trucks and trailers from traveling on certain streets in residential areas, citing concerns about heavy vehicles damaging recently repaved surfaces.
Walt Landers outlined the changes, which would extend truck restrictions to streets north of Woodlawn, including Kankakee Street north of Keokuk, parts of Logan, Nicholson and Broadway, and several north–south streets near the bottle-factory warehouse. Landers said drivers unfamiliar with local streets follow GPS routing and use neighborhood cut‑throughs rather than state routes.
Alderman Parrot and others asked whether semis without trailers, cement trucks or vehicles making local deliveries would be exempt. Staff responded that the ordinance targets through traffic by semis with trailers and that local deliveries would be allowed; enforcement would start with education and signage, and police would use citations only after warnings.
Councilmembers recommended adding signage and an education campaign directed at the bottle-factory and affected carriers. The committee agreed to place the ordinance on the regular agenda for ordinance consideration and possible adoption.
