Pembroke School Committee accepts PTO gift for water filtration, approves surplus and an eighth‑grade JV waiver

The Pembroke School Committee on Sept. 16 unanimously accepted an $11,000 gift from the North Pembroke Elementary School PTO to help install six new water filtration units at North Pembroke Elementary, pairing that donation with an $18,000 School Water Improvement Grant (SWIG) award, Superintendent (S3) told the committee. "In your packet, you have information about the gift that they gave in the amount of $11,000 to install the new water filtration systems here at North Pembroke," the superintendent said.
The committee voted to accept the PTO gift; Chair (S1) recorded the motion as passing unanimously, 5-0. The superintendent said the SWIG grant was awarded for $18,000 and the PTO matched with $11,000 so that six filtration units could be installed around the building.
The committee also approved a motion to declare certain assessment materials and a nonfunctional color printer at the Habomuk library as surplus so the district may dispose of, sell, recycle, or donate the items; that motion passed unanimously.
On athletics, the superintendent reported fall sports participation trends and requested an "MIA waiver to allow eighth graders to play JV soccer" this year to address tight roster numbers. He cited 29 girls signed up for soccer, two injured, leaving 16 on varsity and 13 on JV. Committee members discussed safety, fees, and transportation; the approving motion was made by Katrina Delaney and seconded by Allison, and the committee voted 5-0 to grant the waiver.
What the votes mean: acceptance of the PTO gift clears the way for installation of the filtration units; declaring materials surplus authorizes their removal from inventory and disposal pathways; the waiver permits eligible eighth‑grade players to participate at the JV level for the current season under district and league rules.
