The Board approved an exclusive agreement with the American Powerboat Association (APBA) to permit the APBA to evaluate county waterways for potential powerboat racing events. Staff explained the agreement allows the APBA to investigate, do site assessments, and report back; it does not authorize any events or bind the county to future contracts. The agreement was described as terminable at will by either party.
Staff said they expect a site visit in early next month and that the APBA’s assessment would identify candidate bodies of water and the feasibility of staging events, while any event permits or contracts would require separate board approval. Commissioners approved the exclusive assessment by voice vote and noted the arrangement is for exploration and economic-assessment purposes only.
"It is for assessment purposes — we'll let them come down and survey and assess and they probably have to do a lot of legwork involved in determinative," staff said; the board emphasized that any event, permit or contract would return to the board for approval.
