North Augusta staff recommend renewing contract with Aiken County Public Defender for indigent defense in municipal court

City Administrator Jim Clifford told council that Resolution 2025‑38 would authorize the city to renew a contract with the Aiken County Public Defender's Office to provide representation for indigent defendants in North Augusta’s municipal courts. Staff indicated this is a statutory or procedural requirement to ensure access to counsel for defendants who cannot afford private attorneys and that a final contract document would be included in the council packet by Friday for council review.

Clifford said the city has executed similar arrangements in the past and expects to recommend funding for the contract so the Public Defender’s Office can continue to accept appointments; he noted a recently approved solicitor could increase municipal caseload in the near term.

No vote was recorded during the study session; staff presented the item so council members could review the renewal ahead of formal consideration.
