District administrators provided updates on student activities, athletics and short-term financial trends at the Waynoka Public Schools board meeting.
School activities and incentives: A school staff member reported October highlights including Halloween activities, a food/spook parade supported by local businesses, and an incentive trip to the Stafford Air and Space Museum for qualifying students. Staff said 70 elementary students qualified for a "row club" by having perfect attendance and no behavior incidents during October. Staff also described a classroom goal tied to test proficiency: if a class reached 55% proficiency in a subject, they would receive a celebration planned by school staff.
Athletics and arts calendar: Administrators reported on athletics—highlighting the high school football team’s win at Buffalo on Nov. 6—and scheduled junior-high and high-school tournaments and scrimmages. Choir and fine-arts students auditioned for regional festivals, with the fifth–12th music program scheduled for Dec. 4. Veterans Day and other seasonal events were also noted with dates provided for performances and activities.
Finance briefing: Administrative staff reviewed the district’s month-to-date finances. Expenditures appeared down for the month because a sizable county assessor bill, approximately $50,000, had not posted and is expected to appear in next month’s statements. Year-to-date revenue was reported as down, which staff tied in part to a settlement from the ACB. The building fund showed no expenditures for the month. Child nutrition expenditures were reported up roughly $6,000 year-over-year for the year-to-date comparison while revenue for the program was down about $5,000 for the month; staff noted this is a trend to watch. Daycare program expenditures and revenue were both down, attributed to having one fewer employee and lower enrollment.
What’s next: Staff said they will continue to monitor revenue and expenditure timing and will present any material changes to the board. The board granted staff authority to open an account and appropriate a pending donation contingent on receipt; staff will return with documentation when the check is received.
