McCluskey gym renovation progressing; board told new ADA-compliant bleachers are coming

Select Board members received an update on the McCluskey gym renovation, where contractors removed old bleachers and stripped the flooring in preparation for refinishing. "It took cost about $15,000," Speaker 3 said of the removal and dumpster work. Speaker 3 said the contractor has been paid for that portion and that new bleachers are expected to arrive after a roughly six-week lead time.
The board discussed court markings and accessibility. Speaker 3 said the town asked the line-painting contractor to combine the basketball baseline and out-of-bounds lines with pickleball markings to reduce visual clutter. The board also agreed not to paint volleyball lines because the facility no longer supports regular volleyball play. In addition, the basketball association arranged colored lines for an inclusive program so those players can find their court boundaries more easily.
Speaker 3 said the largest set of bleachers will remain, while the right-side bleachers (the ones users enter from that side) were removed for replacement. The new bleachers are designed to be ADA-compliant and retractable, allowing the town to stow them to prevent damage when not in use. The board also discussed a possible third pickleball court using temporary roll-up lines to increase court availability without permanent markings.
The board took no formal vote on the project at this meeting, but members noted the work should be complete in the coming weeks ahead of the indoor recreation season.
