Staff from George McGovern Middle School told the Sioux Falls School District board that a year‑and‑a‑half monthly service program has strengthened staff teamwork, modeled community service for students and created new connections to local social‑service organizations.
Sarah Mueller, dean of students at George McGovern Middle School, told the Sioux Falls School District board that a monthly staff service‑learning initiative has run for about 18 months and pairs staff with community organizations to serve families and model civic engagement for students.
"When we serve side by side, we not only make a positive impact in the community, but deepen our connection as a staff," Mueller said. Staff volunteers described partnerships with Banquet West, Live Inspired 365, Saint Francis House and upcoming volunteer work at the Ronald McDonald House. Teachers said the work helps them see students and families in new contexts and makes classroom teaching easier because staff better understand students' home situations.
Board members and Superintendent Dr. Knowles praised the program as an example of community members and staff contributing beyond the district budget. Dr. Knowles noted much help comes from donors and volunteer efforts that are outside formal budget lines.
School staff said the program also opens new referral pathways to community resources: by building relationships with local nonprofits staff can direct families to services when needs are identified during outreach.
The presentation concluded with the board thanking the staff and distributing a small token recognizing the "Be the Difference" theme of the year.
