Senate unanimously advances bill letting veterans audit college classes

SALT LAKE CITY — The Utah Senate unanimously moved forward Senate Bill 45, a measure to permit veterans to audit higher-education classes without paying tuition or receiving credit when space is available.
Sponsor Senator Wyler described the bill as “very simple” and said it would let veterans attend classes, ask questions and observe coursework in the same manner senior citizens are allowed to audit. He noted the bill had unanimous support from the Veterans and Military Affairs Commission and the Education Committee.
Senator Wyler said auditing students typically do not submit papers or take tests. A colleague noted there is commonly a modest fee for auditing at some institutions; “there's usually a $10 fee,” Senator Milliner observed on the floor.
The motion to read SB 45 for a third time passed by voice vote and the chair recorded the bill as having received unanimous support on the floor.
