Superintendent and school leaders told the board that district data show improvement in several areas while noting ongoing challenges.
In the superintendent's monthly report staff said food nutrition revenues exceeded expenses and the district's cash balance had improved to roughly $29,000–$30,000 positive for FY26 compared with a negative $14,719 at the same point last year. The superintendent said the district will continue monitoring monthly results and that free breakfasts and lunches remain available to students.
East Marion Elementary principal presented school performance data: reading proficiency reported at about 37% and math proficiency about 42%, with school goals set higher (50% reading goal cited). The principal highlighted 69% growth among the bottom 25% of students and a range of interventions — including arts integration, targeted remediation and expanded community partnerships — aimed at raising proficiency and reducing chronic absenteeism.
West Marion Primary principal reported improvements after restructuring (noting gains in third- and fourth-grade proficiency and substantial year-to-year growth) and outlined goals to reach higher accountability ratings.
The Marion County Career & Technology Center presenter reported 12 CTE programs with 463 students enrolled at the center, 93 students tested producing 108 certifications, and about $54,000 received from the SWIFT board tied to the certifications; the center also described new dual-enrollment offerings and plans to expand adult education and employer-aligned work-based learning.
Board members asked clarifying questions about interventions, teacher retention strategies and the use of grant and donated funds; administrators said they will continue to return with updated data and implementation plans.
