The Portsmouth Town Council on Nov. 10 approved its consent agenda and, in a lengthy Board of Licenses session, granted a slate of liquor and vendor licenses for local businesses.
Council members approved the consent agenda by voice vote, and then the council convened as the Board of Licenses to consider routine renewals and initial licenses. Items approved included Class A package-store and Class B (full-service) licenses for a range of establishments on East and West Main Road and Park Avenue, seasonal and club licenses for country and golf clubs, and Sunday and extended-hours renewals for outlets including Cumberland Farms and several Dunkin’ locations. Several council members recused themselves on individual items because of conflicts of interest; most motions otherwise passed unanimously.
Police Chief Peters told the commissioners he was monitoring one recent incident tied to a VFW-hosted Texas Hold’em event advertised publicly and said the department found a violation of Rhode Island General Laws related to gaming; the council voted to approve that club’s liquor renewal without imposing a probationary condition.
The Board of Licenses adjourned and the council resumed regular business.
The actions recorded in the minutes list each approved license and any recusals; all votes on the items considered at the Board of Licenses session were recorded as passing on voice votes or unanimous roll calls except where noted in the meeting record.
