The Marion County School District Board voted 5–0 to advertise a lighting project at the Westmere High School baseball field and to move forward with Option B for track and field updates, with staff instructed to solicit bids for both projects.
Board member Foster presented the lighting proposal prepared by Duncan Engineering PA, saying the project covers planning, specifications, bidding and project management and was intended to correct leaning poles and improve safety and visibility at the baseball field. "We had poles that were leaning, better lighting for safety," he said while outlining the scope. The board then approved advertising the work for competitive bids (motion by Mr. Walters; second by Miss Johnson).
On the track and field project the board debated two placement options for throwing events. Option A would place the discus and shot put behind the baseball field and closer to the playing turf, which staff and some coaches warned could create divots and require post-event turf repairs. Option B would move throwing events to a front-of-campus location on constructed platforms, keeping events separated but requiring planning to run events across campus.
Board members and staff discussed coach feedback and turf preservation. One board member noted the district has hosted three to four track meets a year normally, and said minimizing damage to the recently renovated football field was a priority. After questions and discussion, the board voted unanimously to adopt Option B and to advertise the track work for bid.
The board did not discuss contract award amounts or vendor prices in open session; the approved motions directed staff to pursue competitive bids and return with recommended contractors and cost estimates for board consideration.
