Sherry Shatterberg, speaking for Kiwanis, described a four-hour morning of seatings, a hot buffet served by Florian and community volunteers, reindeer outside the venue and ticketed time slots. "It all gets a good home," Shatterberg said, describing how proceeds are recycled to local youth programs and scholarships. She told commissioners the group provides roughly $4,000 in scholarships each year.
The commission discussed potential conflicts of interest before taking the vote. One commissioner said they would recuse themselves because they are a Kiwanis member; Attorney Sadak advised commissioners that whether a member must recuse can depend on whether they serve on the outside group's board and vote on expenditures. Finance staff member Steve moved to approve the $5,000 request and the chair seconded; the chair announced the motion carried with a tally of 2 yes, 0 no and 2 recusals.
Next steps: the approved funds will be disbursed to the Kiwanis for event expenses and scholarships. The commission did not specify which commissioners recused themselves on the record.
