City OKs up to $850,000 for MEDC wayfinding and gateway signage

Montgomery — The City Council on Nov. 10 approved an MEDC proposal authorizing up to $850,000 for city wayfinding and gateway signage.
Council members reviewed a comprehensive wayfinding package covering gateway monuments, directional signs for city hall, the college and parks, and several other sign types. Planning staff said the chosen vendor should deliver the signs in phases and that the package was reviewed against the MEDC-approved design.
"We went through the whole city to pictures. We assessed what kind of signs would work," a planning staff member said, describing field visits and an effort to preserve the city's branding, colors and font.
Council discussion focused on scope and whether the project would replace most city wayfinding (but not standard street signs). Staff said the package includes gateway and directional signs and that large incoming gateway signs are part of the scope.
Council approved the request by voice vote. Staff said installation will be phased and coordinated with right-of-way and site conditions.
