During public comment at the Nov. 10 meeting, several residents raised a range of concerns.
Vincent Marmar asked the board to remove sexually explicit materials from district libraries, citing a Journal of Communication Research article he named and arguing that exposure to erotica increases acceptance of harmful myths. Marmar said he has repeatedly asked the board not to use his professional title and emphasized the concerns were his personal views.
Resident Doug Lee criticized what he described as a shift away from core academics toward social and emotional emphases, asked whether the enrollment increase cited by the superintendent related to four‑year‑old programs, and said he intends to seek state office to focus on education policy.
David Martin referenced a June 2025 U.S. Supreme Court ruling he identified as Mahmoud v. Taylor and urged parents to vigilantly review curriculum and take advantage of opt‑out rights where classroom material conflicts with religious beliefs.
Scott Van Soltman expressed disappointment with spending attention given to an automated floor scrubber versus larger capital projects, asked about plans for the current aquatic center and older district property (60 acres on Butchart), and suggested selling or repurposing underused district real estate.
Board staff said appropriate administrators would follow up with those who requested it. The board did not respond directly during public comment as it followed its stated public comment procedure.
