The Madison City Board of Zoning Appeals approved two variances from development standards at its Nov. 10, 2025 meeting.
David J. Craig requested a variance (ZV D-25-13) at 1145 West 2nd Street to permit a porch and carport to extend toward the property line. Craig said the existing porch is already on or near the line and that the proposed change would cover the entry and provide a carport. The board reviewed the three variance criteria — public health/safety, effect on adjacent property values, and practical difficulties — and members said they saw no injurious effect and that the variance was necessary to make reasonable use of the property. The board voted to approve the variance; a roll-call recorded affirmative votes from members present.
Victoria Howard sought a variance (BZVD-25-14) to build a one-story, two-car garage on an existing concrete pad at 510 West Main. Howard told the board she had revised her request after further investigation: the north-side setback is two feet (previously thought to be zero), with zero setbacks on the east and west. Board members again found the three criteria met and approved the variance. The board instructed the applicant to coordinate with staff to receive the variance paperwork and to have it filed with the county recorder.
David J. Craig said of his project, "what I wanna do is to be able to make a porch there," language he used in describing the porch and carport. Victoria Howard noted contractor plans, saying, "Bumper Johnson is who I'm hiring to build this proposed garage." Both approvals were carried in recorded roll-call votes.
What happens next: staff will provide approved applicants with variance paperwork and file the recorded documents with the county recorder.
