Edina High School student council members presented a student‑led marketing plan to the Edina Public School District board on Nov. 10 aimed at retaining local students and recruiting incoming freshmen.
Clara Johnson, representing the student council, said the team used surveys and other research to identify misconceptions that lead some Edina residents to choose other schools. "Students think academics aren’t as strong at Edina High School and that class sizes are too large," she said. The students told the board they compared local statistics with nearby schools and found similar college‑acceptance outcomes.
Their proposals include adding student panels to school tours and middle‑school visits, a welcome table with Edina merchandise, a shadowing program that would let prospective students sit in on classes, and hosting an open house with presentations, personalized student tour guides and an activities fair. Whitney Van Sloan and other presenters said the activities aim to give younger students tangible ways to picture themselves as part of the school community.
Board members asked about the research findings and how the district can address persistent perceptions. Dr. Alan Bergman praised the presentation and asked what the students learned about why residents choose other schools; presenters reiterated that inaccurate impressions about academics, athletics and belonging were common. Board Chair Gabler commended the district’s marketing and communications director for including student voice in planning.
The board did not take action on the proposals; the presentation concluded with thanks to the students and an invitation to continue collaborating with district staff on recruitment activities.
