The City of North Miami proclaimed November as Prematurity Awareness Month and will light City Hall purple to honor families affected by preterm birth.
Vice Mayor Cassandra Timothy introduced the proclamation and invited Sarah Bloom of March of Dimes South Florida to accept it on behalf of the organization. Timothy described the issue as personal, recounting that her daughter spent 60 days in a neonatal intensive care unit, and stressed the city’s intent to partner with local providers to improve maternal and infant health. Sarah Bloom thanked the council for the recognition and said raising awareness and partnership are vital to reducing preterm births.
City staff provided routine community announcements: a hurricane-relief donation drop-off at the North Miami Police Department and Sunkist Grove Community Center; youth tutoring and financial-literacy programs at local centers and libraries; a District 4 computer-literacy program; a city-sponsored owner-occupied rehabilitation program lottery set for Nov. 26; and several upcoming community events including a Veterans Day breakfast and the Golden Jubilee parade.
From emergency management, Sergeant Joseph urged residents to prepare before storms form and noted a cold-weather advisory with low temperatures near 43°F, advising safe heating practices. "Remember, preparedness, isn't just when the storm is on the map," he said.
Most announcements were informational; no formal council action was taken on these items during the meeting.
