West Bend police introduce new canine 'Valor' to support patrol and investigations

The West Bend Police Department formally introduced its new police canine, Valor ("Val"), at the Nov. 10 council meeting. The department’s chief said, "We haven't had a dog in West Bend from the city of West Bend since 2002," and described Valor as a 17-month-old Belgian Malinois trained in both apprehension and detection.
The chief said Valor trained at Jesippee Kennels in Iron Ridge and will be partnered with Officer Trevor Gates, the handler. He described the dog as a dual-purpose tool for finding and apprehending suspects as well as narcotics, property and human detection, and emphasized that Valor is a trained police member, not a comfort dog or pet.
The department held a badge-pinning ceremony for the handler and canine; the council and community members welcomed the program as an investment in public safety, funded through last year’s capital budget.
