Board approves middle‑school softball as a club sport; parents to pay modest dues

The West Geauga Local School District on Nov. 11 voted to approve middle‑school softball as a club sport for the 2026 calendar year after a presentation from Nancy Wachowski.
Wachowski told the board the program aims to develop softball skills, teamwork and confidence and prepare students for high‑school play. She said tryouts over the last three seasons drew 20–25 girls, with last year’s final roster of 15 (five seventh graders, 10 eighth graders). The proposed schedule included roughly 12 games (six home, six away) and practices three times per week; parents would provide transportation to practices and games.
Wachowski said parent dues would be about $135 to cover uniform costs (about $55 per player from a quote), umpire fees (about $40) and landscaping/field prep for home games. She said coaches and volunteers will be required to hold current certifications and background checks; she noted she holds a pupil activity permit and current CPR/first aid/Emergency training.
The board asked whether financial assistance would be available for families; administrators said club sports do not automatically have district financial aid but donations to the separate club entity can be accepted to help families in need.
Trustees approved Resolution 4‑30 to authorize the middle‑school softball club.
