Summary
Parks staff reviewed the 2024–2027 work plan and provided project updates: Denzer Park construction timing, Altman Park field and playground progress, Mississippi Dunes Park grant pursuit for a park access road, Kingston Park design awaiting council approval, and Petersen Park trail/parking plans.
Parks staff (Speaker 2) reviewed the commission’s 2024–2027 work plan and provided a sequence of project updates for parks and natural resources.
Key project updates included: homes developing near Denzer Park and plans to start construction on the park next year; Altman Park’s three turf fields and parking are largely complete, with playground excavation and installation scheduled next week and dormant seeding planned for current season; Mississippi Dunes Park staff submitted an application for a state park road/access grant that could free other funding for playgrounds and piers; Kingston Park design is complete but construction awaits council approval likely not until late 2026 or early 2027; and Petersen Park will have trails built by the developer and a new north-side parking access from Jamaica.
Staff also noted maintenance and restoration work on the trailway corridor, including burning brush piles and reseeding prairie areas, and repairs to welcome signage near Still Ponds Park pending a new printed sign. The commission discussed site tours for Oakman Park next spring or summer and clarified that youth commissioner seats (ages 13 and up) are open for recruitment.
During commission comments, Councilman (Speaker 6) updated the commission that the City Council approved an environmental-impact statement (EIS) process related to a proposed mine expansion (the EIS was approved as compliant with state law but did not grant authority to begin mining operations) and reminded the commission of significant 80th Street reconstruction next summer including lane closures and a new roundabout.
