Monroe County Council unanimously approved the aviation department’s request to accept an FAA Airport Improvement Program award and appropriate $157,895 for assessment, design and bidding work to refurbish the county airport’s 53‑year‑old air traffic control tower.
Airport director Carlos Laverty told the council the tower’s equipment and HVAC systems have exceeded their life cycles and the airport has seen a 28% increase in operations since the tower’s initial construction. The total design and bidding cost is $157,895, with the FAA providing $150,000, the state $3,947 and a local match of $3,948.
The project, described as assessment, design and project bidding, will prepare the airport for subsequent capital work once final engineering and bids are complete. Council approved the appropriation by roll call vote, with no public comment on the item.
