The Wausau Human Resources Committee unanimously approved a plan on Nov. 10 to designate Martin Luther King Jr. Day as an annual in-service day for department heads and management.
The HR director explained the proposal would make the day a standing item in the city handbook so management can plan agendas and team-building activities a year in advance. "This is something that's been approved by previous mayors," the HR director said, and formalizing it would give departments more time to prepare and communicate with residents about why City Hall is closed.
Committee members expressed support for a formalized agenda so residents would know why offices are closed and what activities are planned. The committee approved the plan by voice vote (motion by Killian, second by Martins).
