Historic board hears project updates; Mill 5 Hive marketplace draws crowds

Lowell — At the Nov. 10 meeting the Historic Board received its regular administrator's report covering multiple downtown projects and upcoming informational sessions.
Staff said the rehabilitation of 484 Merrimack (the Husson Building) is moving forward with restored bay windows and storefront coordination. The board was notified of informational sessions scheduled for December (43 Fletcher Street, known as the Furies Bar) and January (564 Dutton/22 Fletcher, a redevelopment proposal that would replace a Dunkin' Donuts with a 4–5 story residential building and requires partial demolition of historic fabric). Staff said developers are coordinating with zoning and legal counsel and will present details at the scheduled informationals.
Staff also reported that the Hildreth Building window installation is underway and that the recently opened Mill 5 'Hive Public Marketplace' has drawn unexpectedly strong weekday and weekend visitation, energizing nearby sidewalks and commercial activity.
No formal votes were taken on these agenda items; the board noted the updates and asked for continued coordination during design-review and demolition permitting phases.
