Moab board advances appointment of hotelier Mike Ewell to advisory board; will proceed to county commission

The Moab Tourism Advisory Board advanced the appointment of Mike Ewell to its advisory board following an interview during the Nov. 11 meeting.
Ewell, general manager of the La Quinta in Moab, described roughly 10 years living in Moab and a hospitality career focused on increasing length of stay. "The highlight of my day is sharing those experiences with other people," Ewell said, explaining his interest in helping attract multi‑night visitors and support local lodging and restaurants. He raised downtown cleanliness as a priority for improving visitor impressions and said he has experience serving on local visitor-bureau boards.
Board member speaker 8 moved to appoint "Michael" to the advisory board; speaker 16 seconded the motion. The chair called for raised hands and indicated the motion was unanimous. The chair and others explained the appointment is not final until the county commission votes to confirm the nomination and staff will follow up with the appointee about next steps.
The board also discussed term lengths and that the commission will set the official term; Ewell was asked to stay involved in board activities and to coordinate with staff on onboarding.
No formal roll-call tally was recorded in the meeting minutes; the chair said commissioners not present were at conferences and that the vote taken at the meeting was unanimous by those attending.
