Choctaw County Commission schedules Jan. 6 hearing on road vacation; approves routine agenda items

The Choctaw County Commission on Nov. 4 approved routine business items, authorized several solicitations, and scheduled a public hearing on a road‑vacation request to the former TAMCO building.
During public comment, Johnny K. urged the commission to remove or relocate a Confederate statue on county property, calling it "a symbol of slavery" and saying it encourages hate. "Before something ugly like that happened in this county, I would like to see people stand up and act like men and women and remove that ugly scar off the face of Choctaw County," Johnny K. said. The commission took no formal action on the public comment during the meeting.
On routine business the board approved the Oct. 14 minutes and voted to let the county engineer solicit annual maintenance and gasoline/fuel bids after coordinating language with the county attorney to avoid procurement problems. The county engineer (identified in discussion as Steve/Adamson) said the first bridge on Sour Road has reopened and work has started on a second bridge.
The commission also authorized the landfill manager to advertise for one or more full‑time county positions for landfill operations, citing recruitment and retention challenges when only part‑time roles without benefits are available.
A formal application to vacate a public road to the old TAMCO building (project ID 012-000-001) was accepted for filing; the commission approved a resolution setting a public hearing on that road‑vacation application for Jan. 6, 2026, at 9:00 a.m. and directed staff to advertise the hearing. Several other procedural motions were approved by voice vote, including cancelling the Nov. 11 meeting (Veterans Day) and designating the two usual Thanksgiving days as county holidays.
What’s next: The public hearing on the road‑vacation application is set for Jan. 6, 2026, at 9 a.m.; members of the public who wish to speak on the application will have the opportunity at that hearing. Other agenda items (procurement solicitations and landfill advertising) proceed as authorized.
